Which diet pills are safe?
There are a huge amount of diet pills available which can purchased over-the-counter or via a prescription.
However, both versions can be equally dangerous with some FDA approved products known to cause severe side effects in a percentage of users.
Diet pill side effects
Thankfully better control and regulation over recent years has meant that a number of potentially dangerous products have now been taken off the shelves.
Ephedra is one particular ingredient which was used in hundreds of diet pill formulations to increase metabolism and help burn fat reserves. However, ephedra caused a number of side effects many of them potentially lethal when taken alongside other medications.
Even the FDA approved diet pill Alli, which contains the drug orlistat, is currently under investigation amid fears over long term liver damage. Xenical which is the prescription only and slightly stronger version of Alli, is thought to be responsible for up to 17 deaths since its release in 2001.
Ingredients which should be avoided
Bitter Orange – This ingredient is commonly referred to as the new “ephedra” and has so far proved highly popular with supplement manufacturers. However, some studies have suggested that bitter orange may cause high blood pressure and may even effect regular heart rhythm.
Sibutramine – A drug based appetite suppressant which acts on the central nervous system. Normally found in the recently banned prescription only Reductil diet pill. Read more about Reductil side effects.
Fat blockers – Alli and Xenical both contain orlistat which can lead to liver problems, and also prevents the absorption of fat soluble vitamins A,D,E and K.
Proactol is the worlds first non-drug based fat blocker, which uses natural prickly pear extract to overcome any potential side effects. Proactol has so far proved 100% safe since its release a few years back. Read more about Proactol.
Senna – Although normally well tolerated, products containing Senna can cause diarrhoea and lead to low levels of essential potassium in the body.
So which diet pills are safe to take?
Recently there have been a number of safe diet pills which focus on all natural ingredients, and which do not have the potential to cause any nasty side effects.
Capsiplex is undoubtedly the best of the bunch and contains capsicum – a natural extract taken fromĀ red hot chilli peppers.
Recent studies have shown that diets rich in spicy foods can boost the metabolism by up to 12x without causing any adverse side effects.
Capsiplex has recently been featured in a number of UK newspapers where it was hailed as the “NHS wonder drug”.
